Maria Sousa

Hi there! I’m Maria João, a Portuguese illustrator and graphic designer.

Drawing and illustration have always been a part of my life, from my childhood when I swapped toys for crayons. I love the smell of paint and the feel of paper. Drawing and sketching help me to clear my mind.

In 2021, I started freelancing while studying graphic design in Porto. I fell in love with Risograph, typography, and editorial design, which have helped me to continue developing my skills as an illustrator and graphic designer. I also started my online shop, participated in art markets, and partnered with Coletivo Besta.

In March 2022, I had my first group exhibition in Lisbon with the support of PANÓPLIA, an artist empowerment platform. Although illustration is my first love, I have a passion for design as well. I took on the challenge of being a graphic design trainee at Voltalia, an international player in renewable energy, to bring new ideas and learn as much as possible from my colleagues.
