I grew up rebelling against anything that felt like an imposition or causing avoidable discomfort. I remember as a 3 year old even flinging a ring as far as I could from the verandah, so I would not have to wear it again. This rebellion translated into a (mini)resistance in 1975, when the Emergency was imposed in India, and I found myself assisting hard working dedicated Government staff, write replies to the memos they get. That was probably my initiation both into law and also into being part of organised resistance against various forms of injustice. I also felt that there is a tendency among lawyers, specially reputed lawyers, to take up winnable cases, or to compromise the objectives of the case in order to 'win' it. That is, perhaps, how I am inclined to take up advocacy of lost causes. And also to write on areas of socio economic and political concern
