Design Tutorial: 5 Ways to Be a Better Illustrator

Learn these simple and effective ways to become a better editorial illustrator, with Emma Hanquist

Being a great editorial illustrator often has very little to do with illustrating itself. There are countless artists whose talent was never recognized because they didn’t pay attention to the little things that make the difference between a hobbyist and professional.

Emma Hanquist (@emmahan) is a Swedish illustrator who specializes in editorial illustration and has also worked with brands such as Airbnb and Spotify. In this tutorial, she shares 5 basic considerations that every illustrator should keep in mind to keep quality, consistency, and cash coming in.

1. Find your idea process

Everyone has their own way of thinking and, to make sure you get the most out of your mind, it’s worth working out how you come up with ideas–reading a book, going on a walk, or having a nap–and ensuring you include that in your work process.

2. Plan your time

There is only so much time in the day. Make sure you give yourself time to work, rest, and play so you can make every deadline comfortably. Not only will this make your life less stressful, it’ll probably improve your illustrations too.

3. Build confidence

Successful illustrators believe in themselves.Practice your lines and self-expression every day so you know you are at the top of your game.

4. Be organized

Organization doesn’t just apply to the calendar. Whether it’s your filing on your computer, your accounts, or your communication with your clients, organization matters: you’ve got to be able to find your work quickly and easily to keep yourself calm and your clients happy.

5. Develop your style

Keep evolving. That will keep you excited and engaged while filling your toolbox with new skills and ideas you can offer clients.
