I stuck with what we’d been showed and did two versions of it. I liked the first attempt more than the second…. This is the 2nd

Just watercolors, salt and correcting fluid

Worked from background to foreground and when area in between foreground and background trees looked (unintentionally from my side) more like a river, I went back and removed more color to (hopefully) make it look even more like a river.
