Casa UQQ was designed and built in co-authorship with Rama studio and is part of a macro project uniquely authored by Rama studio called "house workshop."
Its small scale is essential to us as an office because it once again puts us in touch with the thoughts and strategies we developed during the design and construction of the parasite house. It brings us back to the questions about the city, architecture, construction, and especially the life we lead, considering our training and profession.
It allowed us to look at our environment again and identify that a large part of our city is parasitizing itself and that most of the housing has annexes developed under the premise of necessity, unplanned growth, and, unfortunately, precariousness.
It reminds us of the countless possibilities we have in our informal cities to create, a privilege that we sometimes take for granted and that has gradually given us a vocation, trained us to find answers and possibilities where at first we saw only problems.
It confronts us once again that architecture is a tool for better inhabiting the world, not above it, and that the essence of creation is not to end with a beautiful photo or an incredible sheet we are passing through. Everything changes, especially our space needs.
This project reaffirms to us that to live well, it is not necessary to build or spend a lot, that in cities like ours, we can start to occupy unused spaces to improve our living conditions, and that we have millions of opportunities to find new ways of living well in these complex and chaotic ecosystems in which we live, spending and consuming only what is necessary.
Project Description
Because the place to be rehabilitated will be demolished after three years, we defined the conditions: first, that most of the intervention be removable and can have a second life elsewhere and, second, that the expense be minimal as it is a temporary dwelling.
The space to intervene is an apartment of about 30m2 on the fourth floor of an old informal construction house and, being the top floor, its terrace. An "L" shaped space with facades only at its two ends, the access facade opens to the north, facing the interior space with a service staircase/patio that allows traversing the built complex (other apartments, the Rama studio office, and the open land) and the different facade opens to the east, a bit smaller and focused on the incredible view of the place framing the church of Guápulo, the Auqui hill, and the Tumbaco valley.
The project is divided into two parts. First, the rehabilitation of the existing apartment, which focused on demolishing, closing, opening, and receiving furniture as necessary, and second, the expansion to the terrace that concentrated on making a light construction, easy to build, that resolves the levels, circulations, that is entirely removable, and that provides access to views, light, and natural ventilation to the lower space.
For rehabilitation, it is defined as leaving the lost installations in their place to take advantage of resources and limit expenses. We did not move either potable water or wastewater. This represented the location of both the bathroom and the kitchen in the corner of the "L." Towards the east facade and the view, the kitchen island, dining table, and living room space were located. In contrast, towards the access on the north face, the stairs, the study, and the storage space were located, everything new functioning as completely transportable or removable furniture.
The extension to the terrace is located above the study and access, emerging as a response to the lack of privacy, views, lighting, and ventilation of this part of the apartment since by limiting this facade to only access, the extension takes on the role of a duct. This duct creates useful unevenness, allowing for more functionality, light access, ventilation, and even views. The extension is a soft wooden box that is easy to build, disassemble, and transport. A completely orthogonal box with entirely orthogonal pieces and boards has no parts with complicated cuts or panels that can only fit in one place. An inclined tube that only with its rotation allowed us to create the appropriate unevenness to superimpose several layers of functionality such as a deck, work table, living space, or bed with the function of a duct.
In this box, completely closed on its north and south facades, the east and west faces become transparent and mobile limits that allow you to either be inside a room with a great view or, by opening both facades, be outside mixed with the impressive landscape of the area.
