First of all, thank you, Noe Arata, for my first paper cutting course and the first one on Domestika. I'm an architect and I've worked with models and paper before (however not for a long time), but not in such a sustained and intricate way as creating a project for this course.
I started with thick paper (220 grams), which is a finger destroyer (the numbness worried me at first, but it subsided after a few days :)), and then went down to thinner paper (120 grams), which is waaaay more manageable, but comes with its own challenges (it breaks, it has less rigidity when put in the Kamishibai).
At first I thought the course suggestions and advice might be too detailed, but throughout the cutting process I could hear your voice repeating what I heard in the videos - very valuable. I'm sure I still made all the mistakes in the book (and I knew I was doing them somehow, but I just couldn't stop myself), but your guidance was also there to fix most of them: I didn't have enough support points for the last/back layers, so they were curved, I tore the paper sometimes because I didn't cut the tiny piece in the corner, the Pelikan carbon paper stained (it was the only one I could find) - it sucks big time, using an eraser to clean the stains doesn't work either. I also had some other problems due to the small town I'm in: it was hard to find certain materials and some took time because I had to go to a bigger city or because... lost in translation (in Mexico they have the “papel albanene” - new word I had to learn - later on I found the “papel calca vegetal” :)). So I had to improvise at times, I couldn't find butterfly paper fasteners, and the cardboard for the Kamishibai wasn't big enough, so I made it out of pieces connected to each other, but I used buttons for the fastening system (which I actually thought was perfect for the story I chose).
My choice was “Coraline” by Neil Gaiman - an author I love and a very exciting story.
Here is my process and how it turned out. I forgot to take pictures during the making of, but I hope you can still get the idea… :)
Thank you for my first course on my way to play with paper and create wonderful worlds!
