I´m Carmen Mazarrasa (Madrid, 1980), Self-taught jewelry designer, entrepreneur, and compulsive miniature artist.
I feel like I have been doing the same things since I was seven years old: Playing Shop, observing, collecting,
disassembling and picking apart all kinds of small and useless objects, with the hope of one day making something beautiful with
them- years of filing and storing apparently useless plastic and metal objects, fabrics, samples, beads, nuts, screws, feathers, seeds and dried flowers- just to name a few- come together with a relentless passion for learning new crafts such as carpentry, painting, electricity, upholstery, sewing, embroidery, modelling, clay, metal, glass, oil and acrylic painting in my practice of creating miniature interiors in 1:12 scale that allow me both to recreate spaces from the past and create dream worlds in which I am in control and my wildest material desires are- if not perfect- attainable.
As a kid, I moved a lot due to my parent’s work, and when I did I carried a shoebox full of small furniture to assemble my little home.
In a reality where my house and my context changed, my own, portable treasures allowed me the feeling of having my safe space anywhere I landed. What started out as a game ended up being an artistic and vital project in which miniatures express all kinds of memories, concerns and desires. In breaks from my day job as a design executive and jewellery expert,I return to my workshop and my practice the redemptive power of obsession, tools, and the learning of techniques. A pocket-sized universe that invokes joy through the fragility of the ephemeral and the magic of small things, where things are rendered useless by the change in their scale and at the same time seem absolutely necessary for everything to be in its place.
The recreation of once-existing places pushes me to learn and experiment with new and necessary crafts,
and to pay close attention to the way things are made, represented, and perceived.
