The classic story I chose is « The Hare and the Tortoise ». I imagined a different kind of race and I adapted it to represent the life of visual artists and their struggles to develop their talents and make a living in the current world, navigating through art education, producing original artworks, joining art exhibitions and participating in art contests, self-promotion on social medias, and self-distribution… with a little bit of humour!
I also used my three final images for a group exhibition I join regularly in Tokyo and where we have to make three pictures of 25 cm x 25 cm. The theme that time was « 流れ» (ながれ/ nagare, meaning “flowing” (liquid, time, etc.) and it was held from June 6~11 2022 at Galerie Soleil, in Kyobashi, Tokyo). Since artworks at that show are exhibited vertically, I decided to select the three colors of red (or pink), yellow and green as a reference to traffic lights.
In the first picture, the Hare is a talented artist who won a prize for one of its paintings, a carrot made in a cubist style. The Tortoise is admiring it, taking notes and sketching. With the background made of rabbit ears, we are clearly in the Hare’s world.
The second picture represents the Hare trying to make many copies of his famous paintings in order to sell them online and try to make a living, but at the same time, he’s spending too much time on his smartphone and is becoming lazy. Meanwhile, the Tortoise is practicing hard and improving its artistic skills. The overall color is yellow to remind us to be careful…
In the last picture, with the background made of a turtle shell pattern, and the overall colors being green, we are now into the Tortoise’s world, which is free to go forward. It is now its turn to have won a prize and being successful, and what is the theme of its painting?… The sleeping Hare!

Thank you very much for making this course and to all the other learners who share their ideas and creations. I am now looking forward to applying what I learned to continue experimenting with the goal of creating my own original story!
