For my final project I decided to illustrate the famous story from Aesop's Fables of the Tortoise and the Hare.
I used various techniques learned throughout the course such as:-
I created a graduated background wash starting from the top with blue, green and a browny slate colour at the bottom (to resemble an earthy path through a forest).
The hare, the tortoise, the fox and the deer were cut out of paper that had been created with multi-layered washes, affixed to the watercolour canvas and then details were added using watercolour pencils , gouache and gel pen.
The hedgehogs were created using a wet on wet technique.
The animated frog was created using a minimised version of the frog in resources. The idea for the birds came from another domestika course.
I have enjoyed this project immensely and I would like to play around with illustrating stories in the future.
My goal is to look at how I can convey an idea without too much background detail as I feel this is a weakness in my work so this will involve some research.. perhaps looking at children's books in the library.
I may attempt this project in the future as a measure of progress with my painting.
I am looking forward to the next course with you.

Teacher PlusHow beautiful. It’s really lovely to see you trying the different effects in the creation of a series of narrative images. There is so much to look at and it was a real treat to look at each one and see the changes between them. I love your use of collage for the animals! A great idea to research other children’s picture books in the library - they can offer a whole host of ideas for compositions, visual storytelling and different illustration techniques. Well done for pulling all this together as a final project - I’m very impressed.
