I live in San Jose, California about a thirty minute walk from the headquarters of Adobe Systems. In 1982 I set out to become an illustrator. Found my way into technical illustration (exploded views of machinery).
I Got my dream job as a “concept illustrator” in 1990. Almost immediately was assigned to learn the new software and digital tools then just emerging into the field. I started on a Mac II with a version of Color Studio (a competitor of Photoshop from the company “Letraset”). I wish I had bought shares of Adobe Systems at the time. My corporate assignments were mainly graphic design and trade show concepts. I stayed with the same company until 2009. Recently I have begun to miss the activity of sketching and drawing. I pulled out my most recent sketchbook and found that the last entry was dated “1996”. In the intervening years I have done a lot of things but I have always told myself that I would get back to some form of traditional media. I found that my abilities to actually draw things have diminished significantly. For any of you out there: try not to let that happen.
