Jyll Ethier-Mullen (born 1979 Providence RI), a contemporary artist who journeyed from the landscapes of Rhode Island to the vibrant art scene in Phoenix, Arizona.
Her artistic roots trace back to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where she honed her skills in illustration and painting back in 2003. Mentored by Don Primiano and Kathy Kittell since she was eight, she immersed herself in the world of drawing, oil painting, and watercolor in the inspiring atmosphere of Don's Art Shop in Warren, RI.
Starting her career in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, she ventured through gallery shows and art festivals. During that time she also ran a small non profit gallery called West Side Arts (2009-2011) using the space to provide access to new artists and collaborating with local businesses and other nonprofits to raise awareness to local causes. Some of these causes included issues of abuse and injustice against women, homelessness and crossroads shelter, recycling with Steelyard, and working with the State Council of the Arts. From the east coast to the west, her art found its way into galleries in Los Angeles County and Ventura County. She even had the honor of being an artist in residence at Studio Channel Islands from 2018 to 2021 in Ventura County, CA.
Known for her abstract landscapes inspired by the desert and ocean, she draws inspiration from places she has lived and explored on foot, reflecting hundreds of hours spent in nature on hiking trails close to home and in national parks.
Her recent work features watercolor, acrylic inks, cut paper, gold leaf, and paint pen, arranged in colorful, collaged, and layered compositions. It engages in a warm dialogue between texture and shape, balancing flatness, and depth.
Her abstract landscapes depict familiar features like mountains, clouds, moons, cactus, and waves, stripped to basic geometric forms and layered with acrylic inks, marked by repetitive, meditative linework.
Her practice explores themes of belonging—between herself, her community, and nature. Her work considers the ways we connect to our homelands.
