I love drawing portraits and I've done long drawings using charcoal & graphite, colour pencils, pastels, and even did one attempt using watercolor (which wasn't very good as I'm more used to dry medium). Occasionally, I do paint landscapes using soft pastels. I joined this course because I want to improve my ability to draw freehand, which I believe is a major skill needed when drawing from life. At the moment, I use rulers, a compass, and even proportional dividers to measure the pictures I copy. While these tools have helped me capture likeness consistently, I've become way too dependent on these tools and I feel that this has limited me in a way, especially in a setting where I have to draw from life. Hence, I was motivated by the idea of 'portrait sketchbooking' where I can develop the habit of drawing quick sketches freehand using a sketchbook/journal.
