An American living in a medieval village called Cordes-sur-Ciel, in southwest France, I'm a beginner at botanical drawing. In school I couldn't decide between art and literature, so I tried to do both at the same time - and mastered neither. Ultimately, my true love is beauty, in whatever form it takes.
My parents were Viennese refugees, in France and then in Philadelphia, where I grew up. In Vienna in the 1920's, my father made Weiner-Werkstatte-influenced furniture. I was an only child, born late to my parents, in a circle of mostly childless Viennese: artists, musicians, intellectuals, and fervent socialists. Our home was filled with the of people in their circle: hand-lettered books, clothes made from hand-woven cloth, ceramics, cartoons. I discovered Art Nouveau as a teenager, and the Pre-Raphaelites when I lived in the UK after university. William Morris charmed me so thoroughly that I once made a pilgrimage to his home.
I painted until my late 20's when an angry ex-husband burned all my work. After that, I rarely picked up a brush. I made my house beautiful, I gardened, I taught gifted kids and primary school, and I raised beautiful children.
Since the advent of good phone cameras, I've started taking pictures. I'll share a few up my favorites in the portfolio section.
