If you want to create decorative pieces using thick string and your hands as your tool, textile artist Erika Pineda—founder of the Colombian brand Ancestral—will take you by the hand and lead you into a journey through the world of circular macramé. Passionate about this technique, Erika aims to revive this tradition by creating contemporary pieces filled with wonder, that are capable of connecting with the memory and roots of each person.

In this course, learn a range of basic macramé knots and discover how to take these knots to the next level by applying them to a circular pattern. Erika teaches the dyeing process and tricks to experiment with different shapes and patterns to create a unique decorative piece.

If you want to perfect your circular textile compositions, you can amplify your knowledge in this craft with Ancestral’s other course: Weaving with a Circular Loom, where Erika teaches the characteristics of this type of tapestry and its main stitching techniques.

Erika starts off by telling you about how she created Ancestral and the work methodology within her team. Discover where she finds inspiration and go through what you will learn throughout the course.

Understand the origins of the technique with an introduction to macramé, understanding the main differences between the linear and circular technique, and the types of thread you can use to knit. Then, see how to give color to your pieces using different dyeing processes.

Get to grips with your material and learn the basic knotting techniques by creating a small tapestry, which will serve as your sample reference when you start creating your main piece.

Next, learn how to create more intricate circular knots to start creating your final project: a stool cover. Erika teaches how to create and organize your general project outline before starting to weave.

First, create the center of your spiral with a blanket stitch, then create the petals, until you reach the end of the circumference. Continue with the flat blanket knot, and knit the sides of your stool cover.

Finally, get Erika’s expert recommendations and advice to maintain your stool cover in good condition, and see other pieces that you can create by applying what you learned in the course.

A course by Ancestral

Textile Artist

Ancestral is a brand that was founded in 2015 by Colombian textile artist Erika Pineda, who seeks to revive, expand, and consolidate textile art in a contemporary urban context. To achieve this, Ancestral works in two areas: creating hand-made artistic textile pieces, as well as teaching their own technique in workshops to share with others how they can bring their own ideas to life.

The work created by Ancestral is full of intricate details and are individually made so that the result of each piece is unique. This has led them to a presence in several stores in Colombia, as well as collaborating with brands such as American Eagle, Egeo (restaurant in the Click Clack hotel in Colombia), Azul selva, and the El Tesoro shopping mall in Medellin.
