About the video: Creating the image

Overview

“If someone is hiring you to make their portrait it is, in large part, because they saw something in your style that connects with them. Or maybe someone recommended you, or maybe it's a combination of both. Maybe it's something intangible. Part of your job as a photographer is to understand your client, is to ask questions, and also to know which photos of you, and other photographers, they like. Together, they build an inspiration board and you understand your client more. At the same time, it is important to ask your client for photos of their wardrobe (clothes, shoes and accessories). Equally important are the previous photos of where you are going to portray it, or, a visit from you to take pictures of the location environment. With all these data, you are forming color and location studies, so that when it is time for the portrait session, you are more than ready. ”

In this video lesson Catalina Kulczar addresses the topic: Creating the image, which is part of the Domestika online course: Portrait Photography: Capturing Authenticity. Learn photographic techniques and the creative process to capture people's essence in a portrait.

Catalina Kulczar is a portrait photographer, filmmaker, and visual storyteller who creates authentic connections with the subjects she shoots and captures their essence in striking images.

Her work tends to be project-based, or group portraits that convey a larger theme, often exploring concepts rooted in women's roles at work and in contemporary society.

Catalina is interested in creating informed narratives about individual women who have bravely overcome adversity and obstacles in their path, regardless of the sector.

Catalina was born in Caracas, Venezuela, but her parents are Hungarian. She comes from a long line of immigrants and strong-willed women who have survived wars, Nazis, and tremendous upheaval in search of a better life elsewhere, always with their optimism and sense of humor intact.
