Guided Course: Draw Urban Buildings with Ink and Watercolor
“Final Project: Capture the Soul of a City in Line and Wash Now it’s your turn to bring a building to life through drawing. In this guided project, you'll combine perspective, structure, ink lines, and watercolor washes to create a vivid architectural illustration. You’ll start by selecting a reference photo that inspires you — something with strong lines, interesting angles, or unique character. From there, you'll develop thumbnail sketches to explore the composition and refine perspective. Once you're confident in your layout, you’ll move on to a full pencil sketch, followed by inking and layered watercolor details to add depth and atmosphere. The result will be a finished piece that captures the spirit of an urban space with your own artistic touch. 1. Choose and Analyze Your Reference Select a photograph of a building or street scene that excites you visually. Focus on interesting angles, light, and spatial depth. Project example: A narrow European street with layered rooftops and distinct architectural details. 2. Explore Compositions with Thumbnail Sketches Create 3–5 small sketches to try different framings and vanishing point placements. Use them to plan out your scene and discover what works best. Project example: Comparing vertical and horizontal formats for the same scene to see which tells a stronger visual story. 3. Map Out Perspective and Structure Use your chosen thumbnail to identify vanishing points and horizon lines. Build the basic shapes and proportions of the scene, focusing on clarity and alignment. Project example: Sketching a café façade in two-point perspective, emphasizing depth and symmetry. 4. Develop Your Final Pencil Drawing Refine your sketch on a clean sheet. Focus on line quality, spacing, and capturing fine architectural details without overloading the composition. Project example: A precise drawing of a townhouse row with attention to windows, rooflines, and doors. 5. Ink and Watercolor Layers (Optional Completion) Once your pencil drawing is done, use ink to outline your structure, then apply watercolor washes to build volume, shadows, and atmosphere. Project example: Light ink work for contours, followed by warm afternoon tones and soft shadows to give the building life. Share your city, your lines, and your light. Upload your reference photo, process sketches, and final piece to the forum — not just as a finished illustration, but as a visual memory of the place you chose. Maybe it’s a corner from your own city, a building you dream of visiting, or just a structure that caught your eye. Show us how you translated its geometry into emotion. How your ink traced its character. How your colors brought in the weather, the time of day, the mood. Let others walk through your city with their eyes — and get inspired to draw their own.”

Alex Hillkurtz was born in England and grew up in California where he is a renowned storyboard artist for feature films, television, and commercials. His film credits include Argo, Almost Famous, It’s Complicated, and many others. Alex currently lives in Paris with his film editor wife, Tiffany, and enjoys discovering the hidden corners of the city that sketching and painting allow.
He uses the language of cinema to compose his images, moving beyond what one sees and depicting what he wants others to see. He believes that in our overly crowded lives, sketching and painting invites us to move at a more deliberate pace, giving us a true sense of place, where unexpected stories are revealed.
