Guided Course: Creating Characters for Illustrated Stories
“Final Project: Design a character and its illustrated world Now it's your turn to apply everything you've learned to create a character with depth and place them in an environment that reflects their story. This project is designed to help you explore not only the visual aspect of your character, but also their personality, emotions, and the world they inhabit. If you're not sure where to start, here are five ideas to inspire you. Choose the one that speaks to you most and let the visual narrative guide you. Share your process in the forum and discover how others bring their characters to life. 1. Portrait of a lonely character in his refuge Create an introspective character and represent the space where they feel most secure. You can play with symbols that reflect their inner world: objects, colors, and intricate compositions. Project example: A girl who collects insects and lives in a tree house; her room is filled with jars, books, and dried leaves. 2. Character and environment in conflict Design a character who doesn't quite fit into their world. Use visual contrast between the character and their surroundings to reinforce that narrative tension. Project example: An anthropomorphic fish in a desert city, walking around with a fishbowl on its head while everyone around it looks at it strangely. 3. Inhabitant of a fantasy world Imagine an alternate universe with its own visual rules. Create a character tailored to that world, paying attention to how its design reflects the environment. Project example: A light collector living in a floating cave where the sky changes color depending on the emotions of the beings who inhabit it. 4. Symbolic self-portrait in an emotional setting Design a character based on yourself, exaggerating traits or emotions you want to explore. Place him or her in a setting that isn't literal, but symbolic. Project example: A half-human, half-mountain character who lives on an open plain where the wind draws his silhouette differently every day. 5. Character in action within his everyday context Create a scene where your character performs a defining action, within a familiar setting. Use posture, expression, and surroundings to narrate without words. Project example: A cloud-shaped baker baking steam bread while the bakery floats gently in the sky. When you finish your project, share it on the forum along with your creative process. Include your sketches, notes on the character's personality, composition tests, and the final illustration. Tell us what decisions you made and why that setting is right for your character. This is your opportunity to tell a complete, intimate, and unique visual story. Your illustrated world can inspire others and open doors to new narratives.”
