Guided Project: Watercolor on Wood
“Explore new textures with watercolor on wood This project invites you to experiment with an unconventional technique: watercolor on wood. Beyond paper, wood offers a textured surface with its own character, which will challenge the way you apply and blend colors. You will learn to combine watercolor with other materials, such as acrylics and varnishes, as well as explore scraping and sanding techniques to add depth to your work. The key to this project is daring to try and discover how materials react with each other. It's not just about painting, but about working with the surface, adapting to its properties and exploring its creative possibilities. When you publish your project, be sure to share the entire process: • Show the raw wood and tell us why you chose that base. • Explain the techniques and materials you used, and how they affected the outcome. • Share before and after images to see the evolution of your work. Remember that every texture, every scratch and every layer of varnish tells a story. Now choose your idea and dare to experiment with watercolor in a totally new way. Ideas for your project 1. Decorative painting with watercolor and texture Transform a piece of wood into a ready-to-hang work of art. Experiment with watercolor and acrylic to create gradients, overlays, and contrasts. Use sanding and scraping to add texture and give your piece an aged or distressed look. Project example: Create an abstract landscape where the texture of the wood mixes with watercolor effects. 2. Botanical illustration on wood Use watercolor to create an illustration inspired by nature. Learn to play with the tones and transparency of the pigment on wood, taking advantage of its texture to achieve an organic and natural effect. Add details with acrylic or pencil to highlight certain elements. Project Example: Paint a detailed tropical leaf or flower using blending and glazing techniques for a professional finish. 3. Artistic portrait with mixed techniques Explore the combination of watercolor and acrylic to create a portrait with depth and texture. Use sanding to create light and shadow effects, and finish with varnish to enhance the colors. Experiment with loose brushstrokes or defined details depending on your preferred style. Project example: Paint a portrait in impressionist style, taking advantage of the color and texture of the wood for a unique result. 4. Decorative plate with illustrated message Create a wooden piece with an inspirational quote and illustrated design. Use watercolor to add color and depth, while sanding and varnishing give it a distressed or rustic finish. Project example: Design a plaque with a motivational phrase and decorative elements, such as branches, stars or geometric shapes. 5. Mini series of experiments with watercolor on wood Instead of a single piece, create a series of tests and sketches on different types of wood. Experiment with various scraping techniques, color layers, and finishes. Document the process to understand how the materials react and what effects you can achieve. Project example: Do three small tests with different styles: one with vibrant colors, another with pastel tones and another with a monochromatic effect. All these options allow you to play with watercolour on an unusual support and develop your own style. Dare to experiment and discover how wood can become the perfect canvas for your creations.”
