Interior Design Specialization: Materials, Lighting, and Color
“Final Project: Design and Present a Complete Interior Space Objective The objective of this project is to apply all the skills learned in the course to design a functional and aesthetically appealing interior space. You will integrate concepts of spatial layout, material selection, lighting, color, and creativity into interior design to transform a space with a clear and well-defined concept. This exercise will allow you to develop an interior design project from start to finish, from conceptualization to final presentation, ensuring a cohesive and functional design. Project Description You will design an interior space of your choice (a living room, bedroom, office, or any other space), applying a structured methodology that includes: 1. Definition of the concept and mood board: You will determine a style, inspiration and visual narrative. 2. Distribution and organization of space: You will plan the functionality of the place based on appropriate measurements and proportions. 3. Selection of materials and furniture: You will choose key elements for the design, considering texture, durability and visual harmony. 4. Application of color: You will create a color palette that conveys sensations and reinforces the design concept. 5. Lighting plan: You will integrate different types of lighting to enhance the environment and improve its functionality. 6. Professional presentation of the project: You will document each stage of the process with sketches, plans, collages, and clear descriptions. Project Components 1. Definition of the Concept • Research references and get inspired by styles, trends, or specific user needs. • Create a mood board with images, colors, and textures that reflect the overall idea of the space. 2. Design and Spatial Distribution • Draw a functional plan, ensuring that the arrangement of furniture and elements respects the ergonomics and fluidity of the space. • Defines the use of appropriate proportions and measurements to optimize distribution. 3. Selection of Materials and Furniture • Choose materials considering their texture, resistance and maintenance. • Design a list of furniture and decorative objects that harmonize with the concept. 4. Application of Color and Lighting • Develop a color palette based on the psychology of color and its impact on the environment. • Propose a lighting scheme, combining natural and artificial light for different times of the day. 5. Documentation and Presentation • Create a visual document that contains: a) Mood board. b) Space distribution plan. c) Selection of materials and furniture. d) Color palette and lighting proposal. • Explain in a brief text the key design decisions and how they align with the proposed concept. Final Delivery • Complete visual presentation in PDF or images with the mood board, layout plan, materials, and lighting scheme. • Brief description of the concept, justification of the design and decisions made. • Sketches or renders of the space (optional, if you want to improve the presentation of the project). Tips for Success • Ensure the design is functional and aesthetic, balancing creativity with ergonomics. • Play with textures and materials to generate contrasts and unique sensations. • Use real-life references for inspiration and to ensure the elements you choose are feasible. • Don't forget that lighting and color can completely transform a space. Interior design is more than choosing furniture and colors: it's creating experiences and emotions in every space. Through this project, transform a space into a reflection of creativity, functionality, and style.”
