About the final project for: Mastering Watercolor Skies: Techniques for Painting Atmospheres

Painting the skies in watercolor

“Thank you for joining me on this journey through painting skies in watercolor. I hope you've enjoyed the course and learned a lot along the way. Now, let's talk about the course project. To successfully complete, here are the 5 essential steps you need to follow: The Reference Photo Select a photo of a sky that inspires you. Remember, it should be something that resonates with you, whether it's a clear blue sky, a dramatic storm, or a serene sunset. The most important thing here is to choose a scene that you feel passionate about painting.

Plan the Layers Before you start painting, take a moment to plan the layers of your sky. Think about how you'll build up the colors from light to dark. Always remember that patience is key—let each layer dry before applying the next to avoid muddying your colors. Prepare the Materials and Paper Make sure your materials are ready and your watercolor paper is properly stretched if needed. This step is crucial to prevent any unwanted warping as you apply water to the paper. A well-prepared surface makes all the difference.
Build the Painting Step-by-Step Begin with light washes to establish the base colors of your sky. Gradually add more layers, paying attention to the transitions between light and dark areas. Remember, the sky is fluid and dynamic—let your brushstrokes reflect that movement.
Add Final Touches and Adjustments Once your main layers are complete, step back and evaluate your work. Are there areas that need more contrast or additional details? Use lifting techniques or add small highlights to enhance the overall effect. This final step is all about refining your painting until it feels just right.
As you work on your project, don't rush—let each layer dry completely before moving on to the next. I highly encourage you to use reference photos as a guide, but don’t be afraid to add your own artistic interpretation. Experiment with different techniques and colors to make the project uniquely yours! Once you're satisfied with your painting, I encourage you to share it with the community. Upload your final project on the course platform, and don’t forget to include a brief description of your process and what inspired you. Remember, this project is a reflection of your personal journey with watercolor, so feel free to explore and create something that’s different from mine. Your interpretation of the sky is unique, and that’s what makes it special. Lastly, be sure to participate in the forum—comment on others' work, ask questions, and share your experiences. This community is here to support and inspire you, so make the most of it! Thank you again for being part of this course. I can’t wait to see the beautiful skies you’ll create!”

Katarzyna Kmiecik is a professional artist and illustrator, best known for her dreamlike depictions of landscapes. Ever since she can remember, there hasn’t been a day when she wasn't drawing or painting. Her love for art dates back to her very early childhood. In 2012, she started Art School KRESKA in Poland, where she’s been teaching watercolor and perspective drawing, and has been an art instructor at an architectural drawing course in Warsaw since 2007.

Because of the global pandemic, she found herself being forced to start teaching online, and by doing so, she was able to reach a bigger audience and gain recognition around the world. Through those many years of painting with watercolor, she’s developed many experimental techniques, and has also improved some of the commonly known techniques to best suit her needs as a landscape artist. In her work, the most common motifs are trees and clouds, because she has a special love for them. She always looks at nature and the light through the eyes of a child–absorbing and remembering small details and colors with great delight.

Katarzyna is the recipient of the Top Rising Star Award in the International Watercolour Masters Competition 2022.
