An engineer by trade, Mikaela Szumigraj stumbled upon macramé one winter in search of a hobby to fill her free time. Using her technical background, Mikaela crafts truly unique and whimsical 3D sculptures out of rope. Through her studio, String Theories Fiber Design, she creates everything from macramé kits to wall hangings and soft figures.
In this online course, Mikaela takes you through the process of making a 3D sculpture out of macramé. You can make whatever you please, perhaps a whale, a bird, or even a penguin. She takes you through all the knotting techniques, teaches you to choose the right materials and measure them correctly, and finally how to put it all together.

What's included in this course?
Start by meeting your teacher, Mikaela Szumigraj. She shares with you her journey with macramé and how she developed her unique 3D techniques.
After that, it’s time to get acquainted with and select your materials. Once you’ve done that, learn all the different knots you’ll need, how to calculate the correct lengths, and sketch the design.
Then, start on your final project. Create the wings, feet, and beak. Shape the head and attach the facial features. Next, make the body and belly and add the wings on. Finally, attach the feet and finish off your project!
Learn some bonus tips and tricks for your future creations, for sharing them on social media, and for selling them.

The course is very well explained, I had some trouble following the teacher's way of working with the beginning of the head as my project was shaping facing up, whilst the instructor one was going down. I really enjoyed it and I wish there were more tips for creating our own 3d projects for the future.

She first began producing on a small scale in 2017, and gained a lot of attention on Instagram during the pandemic. Mikaela now sells her creations via her online shop in the form of macramé kits, wall hangings, basket weavings, soft sculptures, and more. She also has her own studio, String Theories Fiber Design. Over the last few years, she has dedicated her time to developing a technique for creating macramé leaves and vines on driftwood, which she continues to share with her many followers on Instagram.
