‘There is no such thing as too bright’, is a lesson graphic designer Sean Adams has been teaching since 1992. When it comes to using color, he maintains that it is important to know what the rules are, and also when to break them. He opened AdamMorioka in the early nineties, at a time when design was focused on heavy layering, and dark colors. His unique approach, rooted in purity, simplicity, concepts with emotional resonance, and bold colors, gained him significant media attention. Adams has collaborated with the likes of Nickelodeon, Disney XD, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Sundance Film Festival, Gap, Old Navy, UCLA, and many others. He is the Chair of Undergraduate and Graduate Graphic Design at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California.

What's included in this course?
Start with an introduction to your teacher, Sean Adams. He’ll share his path to becoming a graphic designer, how he shot to prominence, and who has influenced him along the way.
Get an introduction to the power of color. Sean takes you through the terms we use to describe it, how the meaning of it changes over time and between cultures and how we can create an ideal palette.
Then, begin your project by researching and understanding what it is your poster will represent. Once you’ve got a good grasp of that, sketch out concepts and look at options for composition and layout.
Next, refine your colors, experiment with different contexts and applications and explore some technical solutions to problems you may encounter.
Lastly, present our work, go through how you can put together a compelling portfolio, and Sean gives you some parting tips to take with you on your future endeavors.
By the end of the course, you’ll understand and apply color with confidence and be willing to explore the “wrong” choice. You will also have created a unique color palette that addresses communication needs of your project, and be able to present your choices with confidence.

Sean Adams is an internationally recognized graphic designer and the Chair of Undergraduate and Graduate Graphic Design at ArtCenter College of Design.
