About the final project for: Wax Carving Techniques for Jewelry Design

Wax Carving Techniques for Jewelry Design

“Congratulations! You have reached the end of this Domestika course. I hope you've enjoyed walking through my creative process. By using the ideas and guidance I have given you throughout this course, you’re now free to go ahead with your own composition. This could mean finishing the ring you started while completing the course tasks or you could begin a brand-new project! Either way, I strongly suggest you take the time to gather inspiration and make a unique piece of your own. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It'd be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell me if you have any doubts. This will help me understand your creative process and guide you better if you need advice. Let’s revisit the necessary steps to complete your project. Studying the Basics Get to know the wax and the history of lost-wax casting. Also, explore the different types of waxes and what you can do with each one.

The Design Find an idea you want to develop and quickly draw many variations on the design you like. Then, choose your favorite sketch and create the technical drawing of your ring. Measuring and Shaping Measure the basic structure of the ring and cut the ring tube. File it, making sure the piece is symmetrical. Then, size the ring and refine its shape, starting from the sides.
Finalizing the Wax Ring When you're satisfied with the result, clean up and polish the wax. If you want, you can decorate the ring and add the texture you like!
Casting the Piece If you want to cast your piece in metal, add a sprue to the ring. When the piece is cast, remove the metal sprue and clean the ring up. After the signet ring is complete, explore the possibility of having a design engraved or laser etched on top!
I can't wait to see the ring you designed, so don't forget to share it in the forum. You can do so by clicking on "Create your project". I'll be more than happy to answer any of the questions you might have along the way! I'll try getting back to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, participate in the forum, comment on others' work, and interact with the community! See you there.”

“ Final Project Thank you for taking the course, I hope you enjoyed it. Your final project will be a wax signet ring. I encourage you to be creative and try new things. You can follow my techniques but I encourage you to find your style, playing with texturing and shapes. In this course, we started with the history of lost wax casting. We then looked at the tools we'll need and I introduced you to three kinds of wax. We then played with the wax and its properties and I showed you how to create a technical drawing for your ring. We then levelled, measured, and cut the ring tube and applied t...”

Jewelry Designer and Maker

Elsa Tierney is a jewelry designer and maker specializing in lost wax casting for jewelry and sculptures. Her fascination with jewelry and artifacts from all around the world, or “treasure” as she would call them, was ignited from a young age on trips with her parents to London-based museums. As an adult, she decided to turn this passion into a career, receiving a degree in fine art and later, a National Diploma in Silversmithing & Allied Crafts from Sir John Cass School of Art & Design.

Her pieces incorporate influences from modern art that she combines with traditional jewelry-making methods. She is particularly proud of her marionette piece, which boasts the working attributes of a puppet on strings, but can also be worn as a necklace. Her work has been exhibited across the UK, and she is a two-time winner of the Bronze Goldsmiths Award in the 3D Modellers category. Other accolades include the Silver Goldsmiths Award in the QVC category in 2016 and Gold in the Raw Pearls category in 2015.
