About the final project for: Intro to Sustainable Product Design with Wood

Intro to Sustainable Product Design with Wood

“We have come to the end of this course. Thank you for your interest and participation and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. With the knowledge I have given you, you can approach the design of any wooden object and let your imagination run wild. I'd be happy if you don't pursue the exact same project I showed you in the course. Whatever you have designed and made, show it to me on the forum. I am excited! Find inspiration Take a walk and get inspired. By observing your surroundings and everyday objects, you can come up with ideas for your designs. Develop the idea further Further develop your idea in the form of sketches, miniature models and/or 3D models and create a list of materials and tools.

Prepare the parts Prepare all the individual parts and mark them all so that you can keep your bearings throughout the entire work process. Then work them out according to your plan.
Build the furniture Connect all the individual parts and make your piece of furniture. Then you can think about fixing it in some places to make it more stable.
Treating and finishing the wood Decide on a method of surface treatment and finishing to give your woodwork the finishing touch. Keep in mind that indoor furniture does not require any finishing - so this is optional in this case.
You can upload your finished project to the forum by simply clicking on "Create your project". Don't forget to share both your finished piece of furniture and pictures of the different stages of the work process. You are also welcome to add a short description. The forum gives you the opportunity not only to present your projects, but also to exchange ideas with other course participants and to find more inspiration. Of course, I will stop by as often as possible and be at your side with advice and feedback. Have fun and hope to see you soon! ”

“final project Hello, we are at the end of our course "Sustainable design: furniture made of wood". I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. I look forward to your participation. With the knowledge I presented to you in the course, you can work on the design of any piece of furniture made of wood. I'd wish, that you design your own final project and don't exactly copy my furniture, but rather your own approach on wood as a material and on the topic of sustainability and then surprised me in the forum with a final project. I summarize the most important steps of our final project together agai...”

Thomas Schnur is a product designer and has been living and working in Cologne, Germany, for more than ten years. He trained as a carpenter and later studied product design at the FH Aachen. His educational background allowed him to develop the awareness that people design their environment on a daily basis and to realize that he was also part of this group of designers. His projects, which often surprise people with their simplicity and originality, open up new perspectives on the concept of everyday objects.

In 2014 he started to mass-produce his first designs and in 2016 they were part of an exhibition entitled Funktionsraum at the PASSAGEN design festival. Over the next few years, he started teaching at ECOSIGN in Cologne, as well as at HBK Saar, UdK Berlin, and Kunsthochschule Kassel. Thomas designs products for the craft and industrial sectors as well as for exhibitions, books, and spaces. This wide range of activities gives him a comprehensive overview of product design at each moment. In his book Common Things he shares his experiences, reflections, and thoughts on some objects from everyday culture. In Chairman, published in 2021, he offers insight into his collaboration with craft professionals and clients for whom he has created designs.
