Start by getting to know Sari as she walks you through her journey to becoming a full-time knitwear designer. Discover the influences behind her minimalist and classic style to find inspiration for your own pieces.

Go over the different parts of a top-down cable sweater and the process of knitting one. After exploring the types of yarn and needles required, practice making a swatch to achieve the right gauge for a perfect fit.

Next, learn to knit basic right and left cables, both with and without cable needles. Experiment with different variations by adding stitches and switching up the frequency. Bring all these techniques together to create more complex textures and braided patterns.

Then you’re ready to design your sweater. Begin by sketching out some potential looks and choosing your favorite. Cast on the initial stitches and build up the ribbed neckband, later shaping the yoke with raglan increases. Develop the cable pattern along the front of the body and knit the sleeves to wrap up your piece.

Add the final touches by weaving in the loose ends, blocking your garment, and learning how to care for it so that it stands the test of time. Sari finishes up with some tips on sharing your projects and connecting with other knitters who inspire you to keep creating.

Knitwear Designer

Sari Nordlund is a knitwear designer based in Helsinki. After learning the basics as a child, she took up knitting again while in college and was quickly inspired to create her own patterns to bridge the gap between old-fashioned styles and more modern trends. She started out posting her designs on Instagram and Ravelry, later gaining visibility through knitting magazines. This paved the way for a job as an in-house designer at a Finnish yarn company, after which she decided to work solely on her own brand.

Inspired by Scandinavian minimalism and Nordic nature, Sari aims to create timeless classics with textured stitches that add a contemporary flair. Her work has been featured in renowned knitting magazines such as Laine magazine, Pom Pom Quarterly, and Amirisu. She has also collaborated with leading yarn companies such as Woolfolk and Brooklyn Tweed.
