2D Animations: Make Your Character Illustrations Move

“We've reached the end! Thank you so much for taking my course. I hope you found the process helpful and learned a lot about how to add subtle animation to your illustrations. It is now time to work on your animation. This could mean finishing the work you started while completing the exercises or you could start a brand new project! Either way, I strongly suggest you take the time to gather inspiration and make a unique project of your own. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It would be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell me if you have any doubts. This will help me understand your creative process and guide you better if you need advice. The Brief and Mood Board Come up with your own creative brief and start compiling references and inspiration for the look and feel of your character, along with an initial colour palette.

Sketch and Colour Script Create a rough sketch and a colour script.
The Illustration Refine the illustration and plan its animation.
The Animation In After Effects, work on a general movement for the character, then animate overlapping movement, secondary animations, and think about the smaller details, too. You can also add a frame-by-frame animation from Procreate. Colour Adjustments and Export Add additional details like reflections, make some colour adjustments, and export your animation in different formats to post online.
I can't wait to see what you have created! Remember to share your progress and work in the forum. Most important, share your project by clicking on ‘Create your project’. Comment on your peers' work and interact with them. Other students taking the course can also help support you as you learn. I will drop in as soon as possible to answer your questions and give you feedback. Bye!”

First, we started by creating our creative brief and a set of keywords. Then we continued by searching for some references and visual inspiration to inform our ideas and concepts, as well as to help us define our first colour palette for our project. We then continued by creating our rough sketch and also developed a colour script to test out the colours we first created. Then we dived deeper into understanding the principles of anim...”

Eventually, realized her passion was in motion graphics. Since beginning work as a freelance motion designer, she has developed work for Google, such as a Google Doodle representing the Fifa Women's World Cup and created a series of blog animated illustrations for Stoke, on their Adobe project.
