About the video: Exponential Fall Off from Omni Directional Transmitted Light
Overview
“As the distance away from any non-focused light source doubles, the light intensity decreases by a factor of four. Inverse Square Law is an important concept to understand. It has a lot of practical applications. In this lesson, I will give you an overview. ”
In this video lesson Scott McDermott addresses the topic: Exponential Fall Off from Omni Directional Transmitted Light, which is part of the Domestika online course: Professional Lighting for Studio Photography. Learn the fundamentals of lighting by exploring a variety of sources and set-ups to take your photo shoots to the next level.

“Exponential Fall Off from Omni Directional Transmitted Light Previously, we went over some of the fundamentals in action. In this lesson, I want to go over another important aspect of light which is how it changes intensity the further you get away from a source. There's a rule called the inverse square law that states, "The further away you get from the light source, the intensity falls off exponentially.” To start with, we have a bare head which is as simple as it gets. It's just spraying light in all directions. It's coming away from this in a sphere coming out everywhere except behind i...”

Scott McDermott
A course by Scott McDermott
Scott grew up in Switzerland, backpacked through the American West, and trekked the Himalayas before spending the last 20 years as a commercial photographer in New York City. After initially shooting sports, Scott's work eventually shifted toward the athletes themselves and portraiture. This led to him photographing many of the best creative minds in Hollywood, the music industry, and the worlds of business and government. Scott is also a member of International Cinematographers Guild Local 600 as a still photographer.
Along with his advertising work for global brands and major magazines, Scott has created several personal projects including his “Scar Stories” portrait series, the highly acclaimed "Mandela Day” project (capturing the hands and faces of many of those who support Nelson Mandela's message) and a series of portraits accompanying the film "Pop Culture" about the experience of fatherhood. His work has been shown at solo and group exhibits and is held in many collections internationally.
