About the final project for: Introduction to Photojournalism: Capture Powerful Stories

Introduction to Photojournalism: Capture Powerful Stories

“Thank you for joining me and allowing me to share my story and process with you. This course has come to an end, but that doesn’t mean your stories through photographs need to. What I shared with you in this course is a starting point to inspire you to get started with your own journey. There are so many subjects or stories to photograph and to be explored! In this course, I shot a car junkyard, and I’ve shared my process with you. Now I would like for you to share your own process and story. Let me show you an example of what I expect to see from your project: The Subject Select a story subject or issue you want to document through images. Next, establish initial contacts in the place you intend to work, research the story, plan your approach and plot the potential narrative arc of the story.

The Shooting After building initial relationships, start photographing, keeping in mind where you want the story to go, and/or what you must do to follow unfolding events.
As your story progresses, be mindful of the various elements you need to capture (establishing shots, portraits, intimate moments, or scenes with action or movement) and think of your story in terms of having a beginning, middle, and end. Be prepared to adapt to shifting narratives.
The Details Review images, edit and sequence your story in preparation for sharing or publishing.
Remember that, once the shooting begins, you will realize how to build a story with structure and various elements that provide depth and meaning to your work. Keep in mind that editing and sequencing a series of images will help you create a powerful and compelling story with an engaging narrative arc. But this is not just about creating an amazing story through photographs, don’t forget about the social responsibility, values, sensitivity, and issues of consent that this or any other project involves. I encourage you to always keep in mind your ethics and responsibilities as a documentary photographer. As a photographer, you have the power to let others' stories be known around the world. So when you look for a story, remember that there’s no such thing as a “small” story. Therefore, feel free to choose a local, global or universal sort of story, and don’t forget to build relations with individuals or communities, this will make your experience and work richer. I highly recommend you to participate in the forum. Engage by sharing your progress and liking or commenting on your fellow students' work. Be part of the community, know others' stories. Remember that the more you give, the more you will receive! I can’t wait to see your project! See you soon. ”

“Thank you for taking the course. I hope you enjoyed it and learned a lot. I think the thing I would like you really to remember From it, the most important point is that photography is not about the technology, it's not about the equipment we're using it's really about the relationships that you build and that you show through your photography and it's about the emotion that you can portray and show through your work So let's just go back and review some of the main points and the steps that you learn throughout the course. First of all, we selected a story subject that we wanted to documen...”
