“ Tools Make Shapes In this lesson, we are giving a little boost to our creativity by finding out how new tools can achieve new results. We can find new styles by exploring different materials and different ways of writing with our own tools. One thing we can start to do is try to reinvent the tools that we have been using. For example, we have been using brushes and we can try to find new ways to write with them. For example, we'll take a flat brush. This is bigger than the one we used, but it's the same principle. João Varela is a lettering artist and type designer based in Lisbon, Portugal. His passion for letters started in his teenage years with graffiti, and he’s since dedicated himself to creating expressive lettering in different mediums and styles. João went on to study graphic design at ESAD in Caldas de Rainha, and a master’s degree in type design at Écal, but also considers himself to be largely self-taught.
He is known for his experimental approach to calligraphy that challenges the traditional methods. As well as collaborating with clients and studios, João is committed to his personal projects, including a self-published book on his creative process. He also documents his work via Instagram.
