About the final project for: Digital Illustration: Create a Colorful Nature Scene

Digital Illustration: Create a Colorful Nature Scene

“You’ve reached the end of the course. Congratulations! We’ve learned how to use a color palette to serve the mood of our illustration, how to use references, and balance the composition well. And now it’s time to work on your own project! This could mean finishing the illustration you started while completing the exercises or you could start a brand new project! Either way, I strongly suggest you take the time to gather inspiration and make a unique project of your own. Here are a few last tips to help you get started: 1. Do you already have your own library of inspiring images or ideas? If not, try gathering everything that sparks curiosity, that you find inspiring and that you’d like to explore in your work. 2. Find an animal that interests you. This will be the main character of your illustration. Think about what this animal could do? Where is it? Try finding an environment and a situation in which to place your character. How will it affect the character? Does it enjoy its environment? Does it interact with it? Who else is there? 3. Make some sketches! Be messy, don’t worry if your sketch isn’t “Pinterest perfect”! While you draw, remember the composition rules we’ve talked about. Will your sketch follow them? Does the composition influence the scene and serve your storytelling goal? Remember not to follow my illustration too closely. Rather, find a character that you like the most or that you wish to explore. This will help you develop your own narrative and make the illustration entirely your own.

4. Are you happy with your sketch? You can’t wait to get started? So let’s! Prepare a canvas for your artwork. Find a size, aspect ratio, and resolution that suit you the most. It’s true that social media likes images that fit a square format, but I wouldn’t let it dictate the format of my illustration. Trying different aspect ratios helps unleash your creativity. So, in short, if you feel like a horizontal canvas is what you need, go for it! Once you've decided on a canvas, work on a black-and-white sketch, then choose your color palette and apply it to the sketch.
Finally, refine your illustration, working with different brushes and creating texture, details and volume.
5. Enjoy the process! Experiment with your illustration or go with what you like the most. Whatever you prefer, have fun! I think it’s important to enjoy this moment of creating something new, original, and yours.
Don't forget to upload your project on the forum! You can do so by clicking on "Create Your Project". Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It'd be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell us if you have any doubts. This will help me understand your creative process and guide you better if you need advice. I’ll be checking in regularly to look at your posts and answer your questions, but the forum is also an amazing opportunity to give and receive feedback from fellow creatives so that we can all learn from each other! I can’t wait to see your creation! Thank you so much for joining me. I really enjoyed sharing my creative process with you. Talk to you soon!”

“ Final Project We reached the end of the course. I hope you learned all the steps to create your digital illustration. Following all the lessons will make it easy to make your artwork. Be original and creative when uploading your final project. I'd love to see all the steps of your illustration. Start by sketching your idea on the paper. Later, you can give some more definition and clarity in Procreate. I used my black and white draft to later make a color draft for my illustration. I'd also like to see how you did this step on the Forum. Then, I'd like you to add the final image, defining...”

Asia Orlando is a digital artist and illustrator with a sincere passion for art and the environment. After studying interior design and architecture and obtaining a master’s in fine arts and design, she initially pursued a career in various interior design studios. However, it soon became clear to Asia that she needed to take a leap of faith and follow her desire to do illustration. She built a portfolio, worked on her brand and began distributing her work, which led to her landing her first clients and projects.

A large part of Asia’s work is focused on colorful and detailed universes with eye-catching characters and surroundings. Animals and nature are a huge inspiration for Asia’s art, and environmental causes are close to her heart. Because of this, in 2020, she founded the illustration movement Our Planet Week to spread environmental awareness through art. One Planet Week is an annual event for illustrators all over the world. Asia has produced artwork for products, toys, posters, many international brands, and publishing houses including Bayard Presse, Egmont Publishing, and Quirk Books.
