Learn to master the tufting gun to create a striking rug filled with shapes, colors and textures
Have you ever heard of tufting? It's an exciting artisanal technique that allows you to create thick and cozy rugs, using a tufting gun to thread the wool through a stretched fabric.
Guillaume from Atelier Paolo loves exploring all facets of this technique to create original pieces that light up any room. By playing around with shapes, wool, and textures, he teaches you the essentials of the tufting technique so you can create your own rug with a unique personality from scratch.

What's included in this course?
Guillaume starts off by introducing himself and explains his diverse background, from baking to fashion and communication. He also talks about the tufting technique and how it compares to other more traditional styles of rug creation.
Get to feel for the tufting gun, then have a look at how to set up the workspace around your frame. Learn the basic techniques with Guillaume and before long words like "winder", "punch needle", and "cut pile gun" will be part of your repertoire.
Guillaume helps you find inspiration in coming up with a visual composition for your rug. An eye, a moon, a sun—you can choose any symbol you like. Draw a sketch on the fabric, then choose the wool and colors. Let your imagination run wild!
Move on to the tufting process to bring your rug to life. First, tuft the shapes starting with the outlines and do the same with the background sections before sticking on the secondary fabric, which needs to dry overnight. Then, work your way through the finishing touches: cutting, sticking the twill tape, brushing, and shearing the rug. Now your work is complete!
To finish up, Guillaume gives you some tips on caring for your rug, as well as some ideas for creative additions such as pompoms. With his expert advice, share your creations on social media to reach as many people as possible.

A course by Guillaume (Atelier Paolo)
Guillaume had several lives before he started creating rugs. He tried his hand at baking, marketing, and fashion before finally settling in Toulouse after falling in love with the tufting technique. It was there in the so-called pink city that he opened his own creative space, Atelier Paolo, where he makes unique, colorful pieces entirely by hand and with lots of love and care.
His style is Mediterranean and bright, with pop art, Fauvist, and Cubist influences. Much like Picasso, Matisse, or Miró, he loves playing around with symbols such as the sun, the moon, or the human eye to create dreamlike works of art.

FAQs
Tufting is a textile technique where yarn is pushed through a stretched fabric using a tufting gun. This allows you to quickly create rugs or tapestries with a wide variety of patterns, offering great freedom in shapes and colors.
This course is aimed at an intermediate level. It’s best if you already have some basics in textile crafts or DIY, but the techniques are explained step-by-step so motivated beginners can follow along.
To get started with tufting, you’ll need a tufting gun, a frame, suitable fabric (like Monk’s Cloth), yarn skeins, a clipper, carpet glue, and finishing accessories such as herringbone tape.
The course covers every step: choosing your design, preparing the frame and fabric, using the tufting gun, outlining, filling in, gluing, trimming, brushing, professional finishing, and maintenance.
You’ll learn to create patterns inspired by the ’70s, Mediterranean symbols, psychedelic shapes, and custom illustrations, while also discovering how to organize your ideas using moodboards and digital tools.
The course guides you in selecting the right yarn depending on the effect you want: soft or coarse wool, bright or natural colors. The type of yarn affects your rug’s texture, density, and durability.
You’ll learn how to glue a backing fabric, trim edges, apply herringbone tape, brush and shear the surface to get a neat, long-lasting rug, with tips for each finishing step.
