About the final project for: Naturalistic Illustration for Design Collections

Naturalistic Illustration for Design Collections

“ Now that you have reached the end of this course, I am going to remind you of the processes you must follow to complete your final project and share it with the Domestika community. I would like you to briefly explain what you have done in each one and accompany the explanation with one or more images. Reference First, choose the species that you are going to represent and research and sketch the species with which it is related. Pay close attention to the flora, insects and other related animals and to any detail that you consider relevant.

Composition and sketch Create an order within the plane to generate a harmony between the organic elements. Play with the sizes: enlarge the flowers, cross vines, give it a theatrical touch, etc. Generate diagonal axes, opposite connections, adjacent and overlapping relationships, and use fullness and emptiness to your advantage to give dynamism and balance to your work. Also design your color chart to analyze how pigments behave and serve as a reference.
Transfer and inking After transferring the composition to watercolor paper using the tracing technique with tracing paper, he begins to draw with a pen, representing the textures by saturating the line. Do not saturate too much and let nature breathe, so that you can later integrate the color. Both techniques should complement each other.
Color With the brush wet and the palette defined, it is time to paint over the drawing. Using the wet-on-wet technique, he begins to delicately paint the work. When you're painting, aim for precision and stick to the lines. Use a small brush for details and smaller areas.
Final touches You can give the final details with a few light touches of color in pencil, if necessary, and you can also add some important light. For example, you can give the bird's eye light with white gouache (tempera). Then, scan your images and open them in Photoshop, to create your collection based on them. Follow the steps I taught you for this digital process and let your creativity flow. In this way, you will obtain a naturalistic illustration applied to your collection of products, and ready to see the light!
The time has come for you to share your final project with the community by clicking on "Create your project". Remember to share both the final result and the steps that have led you to it. I look forward to seeing your project and giving you feedback. Although I ask for your patience, I will try to access the forum as much as I can and what my professional projects allow me. Finally, I want to invite you to actively participate in the forum, not only sharing your progress, but also giving advice and trying to help the rest of the community. I wish you good luck, and see you on the forum!”

Partial transcription of the video

“We have reached the end and I want to thank you for taking this course. With the tools that I have shared with you, you will be able to create your own artistic and investigative path. Now it's your turn to make your own project. I am going to repeat the steps that we have done so that you can do it. First, we define the species in which we would work and then we made a color chart from photographs to identify the colors of the bird and the organic elements. Then we saw how to make a trace to obtain our sketches, which we then pass on to parchment paper and then to cotton. I later showed yo...”

Pascale-Marie is inspired by the work of ancient scientific illustrators. He has collaborated with different clients, portraying fauna and flora from scientific observation and promoting their knowledge from a visual language.

His most recent work is dedicated to studying and delving into families of species that inhabit Chile and raising informative and illustrated material that speaks of ecosystem imaginaries through research.

Now, her horizons have expanded towards new supports where she can apply her works in the form of products such as textile pieces, stationery, among others.
