Meet Kristína, Slovakian designer, garment maker, and your teacher for this course. She shares her creative journey, and how her passion for folklore clothing, rich textile heritage, and nature has shaped her designs. Hear about the textile artist who have influenced her and where she finds inspiration.
Kristína introduces you to weaving by explaining the basic principles of woven textiles, and shares some three-dimensional examples of corn husk woven shoes from Slovakia. Learn the foundations of weaving by exploring each material and how to use them. Explore the endless textile possibilities by experimenting with different materials and colors.
Start working towards your final design by exploring references and creating a mood board of ideas. Develop your artist’s eye as Kristína guides you through a world of color and demonstrates how different shades work together. Next, learn how to create a customized pattern for your garment, ready for production.
Time to roll up your sleeves and start creating your garment! First, prepare the base for weaving with the tapestry method by fixing nails on a wooden board. Kristína guides you step by step through the process of weaving the basic structure of the garment from front to back. After removing the garment from the nails, add the final touching by embellishing it with ribbons.
After completing the first garment with the tapestry method, Kristína shows you how to make other articles of clothing like a dress, a coat, a shirt, or pants. She also shows you how to create accessories like a bag or a pillow. To wrap up the course, hear Kristína’s tips on how to take care of your handwoven garment, and how to repair it if it gets damaged.
