Gimena Romero has been carrying out research and production of embroidery for 10 years as a successful artistic technique; Her pieces can be seen in collections such as the MoMA in New York or the Banco de México, and she has published 5 works of narrative, poetry and embroidery research.

In this course you will be guided through the techniques that will allow you to embroider on paper with the necessary delicacy to experiment with textures, images, threads and embroidery stitches.

To introduce you to her world, Gimena will review references and projects that inspire her to take the needle and start embroidering.

Then you will see pieces made with embroidery on paper and its collection of punches. It will show you what they are for and how to make yours.

You will know many types of points, with which you will create a beautiful sample. Gimena will show you how to make them step by step, from the most basic to the most complex, such as rehiletes, palestrina, French point, bowtie, rose cup and morse stitch.

You will also learn to choose the most suitable papers for this technique, the ones to avoid and some tips to combine them.

Finally, you will see some ideas to assemble your piece in the place you choose for it.

You will create a composition combining textures of different papers, threads and stitches, to give you an output as an illustration or artistic and decorative piece.

What you need

You do not need to have previous knowledge of any kind, since Gimena will guide you step by step throughout the process.

The materials you will need are perle threads, long buttonhole needles with and without a tip, embroidery and paper scissors, papers of different colors and grammages, a wooden round stick and masking tape.

Artist and writer based in Mexico City and Barcelona. He has trained in different schools in Mexico, Spain and France and has received numerous awards and mentions at an international level. His work has been hosted in various exhibitions in countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, France, Portugal, Ukraine and Spain. He has different publications in narrative, poetry and textile research with Thule ediciones and Editorial Gustavo Gili. His book 'Hebra de Agua' was selected as book of the year in 2016 at the Teixim la ciutat festival, held in Catalonia.
