About the final project for: Creative Illustration Techniques with Gouache

Creative Illustration Techniques with Gouache

“You have now come to the end of this Domestika course. Congratulations and thank you again for participating! Now it's time to work on your own project! To do this, you can either finish the illustration you started in the Unit 4 exercises, or you can even start a completely new project. In any case, I would like to give you a few final tips. It is very important that you take your first steps in gouache painting through lots of trial and error. These colors are very good for finding quick color sketches and moods. Experiment with color samples and their combinations: paint, cut out pieces of paper and put them together to create interesting color tones. Try out the most important painting techniques: • Washing/glazing • Drawing with a reed pen • The "dry brush" technique • Stenciling • Cover with masking fluid Find your own references and compile them into a mood board. From this collection of inspiration and ideas you will make sketches for your final illustration.

You should be creative when painting your illustration and choose suitable techniques depending on the subject. You will prefer some of the techniques presented – try to practice and expand on them as you please!
And when you are finished with your project, think about the direction in which you would like to develop the image. If you play around a bit and equip your character with different expressions or do small dramaturgical experiments, you will see how completely new perspectives open up for further projects! Don't forget to upload your project in the forum. Simply click on "Create your project". Also remember to take photos of the progress of your project and then share them along with your final illustration. I can't wait to see your creation! I'll be stopping by the forums as often as I can to check out your work, provide feedback, and answer questions. But also exchange ideas with other course participants so that we can all learn from each other! I wish you lots of fun painting. Bye for now! ”

Artist, illustrator and author

Aljoschau Blau is an illustrator, author and lecturer in drawing and illustration. After the Wall came down, he left his hometown of Saint Petersburg to study art and illustration in Hamburg and now lives in Berlin. Children's and picture books are his specialty. He has either illustrated or written more than 60 works and strives to do justice to each book with an individual illustration style. For the most part, he remains true to his favorite medium, gouache painting.

What appeals to him about the genre of the picture book is the illustrator's special responsibility to translate content that previously only existed in abstract language into the visual. He sees his projects as intellectual adventures with room for surprises, the grotesque and humour. He often lets the details do the talking and invites the viewer to look around in peace. His books in cooperation with German and international publishers, including Peter Hammer, Aufbau, NordSüd and Bajazzo, have received numerous international awards such as the German Youth Literature Prize and the renowned BolognaRagazzi Award. In "Multitalent Gouache" he recorded his experiences and techniques for illustration with gouache in book form.
