“You have now come to the end of this Domestika course. Congratulations and thank you again for participating! I hope not only to have given you an insight into children's book illustration, but also to have shared the passion for this art form with you. Now it's time to work on your own fairy tale illustrations and create a double page spread. Before that, let me remind you that I don't want you to follow my template to the letter. Rather, I hope that you will let your own inspiration run wild and that many different projects will come together in the forum! As a reminder, I would like to briefly summarize the most important steps for you.
- First, you choose a fairy tale and divide the story into sections to start planning the book. Also consider the age group, the contextualization, the mood and also the pedagogical aspects.
- Then you create color palettes for your story and determine a drawing style - after that you will be able to orientate yourself in further planning in order to arrive at a uniform design.
- Design the characters of your story and set each one its own color palette with codes. I also recommend creating a character sheet with multiple side views so your characters look the same on all pages, and also creating a character lineup to accurately record the proportions and sizes of the characters to each other.

- Then you create a mood board for your book page and think of at least three different ideas how the page could be designed. Consider the structure of the book, the placement of the text, and the perspective/composition of the scene.

- Create color thumbnails to get an overview of your designs; decide on a draft and create a final drawing - first draw the basic shapes and gradually add details such as light and shadow.

Illustrating a scene or story is really fun. But you should be patient and do not skip the planning phase. Make sure you know the characters and get acquainted with them. The more you know about the events, the time and the place, the more diverse and interesting your illustrations will be. Think carefully about who you are illustrating a book for. Is it for toddlers or for children who are already ...”
