About the final project for: Watercolor and Mixed Media for Illustrated Books

Watercolor and Mixed Media for Illustrated Books

“You have reached the end of the course, I hope you enjoyed it. Now you have the tools to produce expressive illustrations. Here are some important steps that I would like to see in the process of your final project: The text: Choose a text that you would like to interpret and illustrate, it can be a classic text or a text from an album book. In addition, make a first analysis of the text, you can make annotations of keywords, write questions, concepts, identify characters and ideas that give you a first idea of the context and tone of the narration.

The storyboard: Make the storyboard of your illustrated story. Remember this is your roadmap or visual script to illustrate each scene or double page in your story. Choose three scenes that you consider important moments in the story.
The color: From the exploration with watercolors and other materials, choose a color palette that you like, and based on it explore the elements (characters and settings) that will make up your illustrations or scenes and make sketches of final compositions.
The illustration: Scan all the material with which you will make your illustrations on the computer, remember to do it at an optimal resolution (minimum 300 dpi). Make the final composition of your illustration in Photoshop with the scanned elements.
I invite you to share your results in the forum, where I will be attentive to give you feedback. I would love that along with the images of your process you share a short text telling me why you have chosen to work with that text and how your path was to arrive at the final illustration. In addition, I ask you to see the projects of your colleagues and to give them feedback in a respectful way. Thanks for taking my course. Until next time!”

“Final Project We reached the end of the course and now your illustrations are ready. I want to remind you of important tips that we saw in the course, especially if you want to continue on the path of illustration. It is important that you find inspiration in artists and works with which you identify, but that you feel safe to build your own look. Define the tone of the texts you want to illustrate, if there is a specific topic or a story that you identify with the most. Remember that when making the storyboard you will have a guide map to start your creative process. Find a point in the na...”

A native of Colombia, Juan Camilo Mayorga studied Graphic Design at the National University of Colombia, where he developed an interest in illustration, art, and a special taste for book illustration, especially the picturebook format, for the creative freedom that the illustrator has in interpreting a story.

After graduating from college, he published his first book Nicolás Aprende Los Números (SM, 2012), where he was able to put into practice the experimentation he had been doing with watercolor. This was the beginning of several collaborations both locally (Colombia) and internationally with the publishing companies including SM, Castillo, Rey Naranjo, El Naranjo, Loqueleo, and Norma.
