About the final project for: Creative Illustration: Play with Unexpected Materials

Creative illustration: play with unexpected materials

“Thank you very much for having participated in this course !! One of my main objectives when considering this journey was to silence or silence that inner critic that sometimes does not let us enjoy the processes. Also understand that perhaps creativity implies moments of high, but also moments in which we doubt everything. I don't want you to feel that the blank page is an enemy, quite the opposite; the blank page hides multiple possibilities. That is why throughout the course I have proposed you all kinds of materials and homemade tools, to lose your fear of drawing, materials and that need to be perfect from the first moment. My project For my course project, I used the STONE method to clarify my thoughts, find ideas that I feel comfortable with and like to work with, or feel connected in some way, and understand what I want to tell. Next, I showed you a lot of different painting techniques, I drew with wine, coffee or tea. I showed you how I build brushes or tools, I played with pens, foam rubber, I even showed you Japanese engraving techniques and engraving techniques with polystyrene and tetrabrick. All this helped me to propose various final projects, artist books, fanzines, objects. My ideas kept changing and flowing as I materialized them.

Your project After all the techniques, the experimentations and all the pictorial possibilities, I encourage you to create an artist's book, fanzine or object book. Ideally, you would use the techniques proposed in the course, but you can also use other tools, textures, materials, papers. The fundamental idea is that you create with the materials you have at home, reusing paints or papers. I do not want to condition your creativity with one or another format, I leave you in additional resources some guides or examples of books, papers, folding. But I really want you to experiment, play and do something personal and your own, starting from your ideas, applying the STONE method (if it works for you) and experimenting with everything you can think of. Remember: • Don't limit yourself with your ideas! Everything is possible; You can paint, paste, cut, add, sew, staple, photocopy. Try to carry it out and do not stop if the idea that it is not possible appears in your mind. • Take several photos, scan or find the best formula to make your artist book or fanzine look and be understood. • Share in the forum your experience, your ideas or processes until you reach the final result. So we can all enjoy your creations. • It is essential that you present your work in a professional manner, the ideal would be to show the images scanned and edited with a design program. Another option is to present your project or illustrations through photos. Remember to use natural light and take care of the composition of all the elements that appear in the photo. This way your work will have even more strength and it will look more professional. Now share your final project with all of us by clicking on "Create your project" . Do totally different things than what I propose! So we can explore your personal universe and at the same time surprise us with your work. And if in addition to sharing your work in the Doméstika community, you want to show your creations with everyone, you can upload your work to the networks, tag me or share with the hashtag #AdolfoSerraDomestika. I really want to see what you have done! Some more tips Exercise your mind! I believe that creativity works like a muscle. If you face different situations, you set yourself challenges, you use new materials, you are continually learning, drawing, creating ... your brain expands and so does your ingenuity. Keep in mind that creativity is the ability to find solutions to problems in a different way. Draw a little every day! Learn by playing and enjoy the tour. I honestly think one of the most exciting things is learning. Keep in mind that you do not need incredible materials to create or generate illustrations that excite. A simple stroke, a line ... can travel very far and excite many people. The really incredible thing when I see a book, an illustration or read a text is to feel that they tell me or share something really. Hopefully this course has helped you to connect with your unique voice. See you soon! THANK YOU very much for being part of the course. It is exciting for me to be able to see closely the processes, the experimentations, the doubts and the encounters of my students. And more in this course where what I really ask you to develop is ingenuity and the ability to find creative solutions with common or everyday materials. Keep in mind that I am already a teacher in other Doméstika courses, as well as an active professional in illustration. Life always brings us surprises, unforeseen events, so be patient, I will review and comment on each of the final projects, you can also find me in the forums and I will resolve any type of doubt. But remember that we build forums together; I encourage you to take an active attitude, comment on the work of other students, ask them for advice or opinion. Only in this way do we generate community and we all learn from everyone. ”

“Final Project Congratulations! You've reached the end of the course. Now you’ve silenced or negotiated with or reached a truce with your inner critic. You’ve also left behind any blocks, expectations, and demands. I hope others’ opinions don't matter to you in terms of your drawings or creations. That’s not what matters in this course. I want to thank you for joining me on this course. I hope all of these tools and techniques have helped you to look afresh at your house, kitchen, at things you've kept around to create your drawing tools and that it shows in your sketchbooks and creations an...”

Adolfo Serra (Teruel, 1980) studied Advertising and Public Relations at the Complutense University of Madrid, but it wasn't long before he decided to follow his childhood passion for drawing by reconnecting with pencils and watercolors at the Escuela de Arte 10 in Madrid. Since then he's been no stranger to colors, papers, textures, and stories.
He loves to experiment with techniques, play with materials, and, above all, tell stories with his art. He considers himself a trailblazer of blank pages who maps uncharted territory with illustrations for children and young adults.
His illustrations have been featured at the Bologna Children's Book Fair (Italy), Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava (Slovakia), Sharjah Children's Book Fair (United Arab Emirates), Ibero-American Illustration Contest (Mexico), CJ Picture Book Awards (Korea), and the International Exhibition of Illustrations for Children in Sàrmede (Italy).
His wordless version of Little Red Riding Hood has been published in Spain, Germany, France, and Mexico, and has won numerous awards. He also won the 19th A la Orilla del Viento Award for illustrated album from the Fondo de Cultura Económica.
