Flat Lay Lifestyle Photography: From Your Phone to Instagram

“Congratulations! We have reached the end of this Domestika course. I hope you have learnt all the necessary skills to shoot your flatlay photos. I also hope that I have given you many ideas and pointers to apply in your own projects. I want you to be original and creative with your final project. I’d like to see you use storytelling in a unique way in your photographs. So, here’s a few tips and tricks to help you achieve this. Begin by taking some time to research and really find what inspires and motivates you. Your influences will be key in this process. I recommend you review the different design and photography principles, especially around grids and composition.

Remember to go for the biggest window in your home and shoot around early morning or late afternoon to achieve a diffused natural light, thus avoiding harsh shadows. Use a reflector if the shadows are still a bit harsh. When gathering your objects, make a careful selection of those that best fit your story. Arrange them in a way that the main subject is the first thing the viewer sees by placing it in one of the intersections and then lay the rest around it so that they lead the eye.
I use a limited color palette, but it’s important that you choose the one that best fits your personal style. Experiment, have fun and get creative! Remember to set your focus point on the main focal point of the image and the timer to ten seconds so you have enough time for the camera to be completely stable and compose yourself in the shot if necessary.
Shoot as many photos as you need and when shooting angled move around and play with the height and distance to find the best angle for your shot.
Once you’re happy with your images, it’s time to select the best ones. Remember this takes practice but I recommend you deselect those with uneven framing, drastic changes in lighting, and objects not placed well. Editing Tips Don’t forget to set the rules with the flags to speed up the process. Once you’ve played around with the sliders, and have an image you’re happy with, remember that you can create a preset or copy and paste this across other images with similar lighting.
Now that you have your final project, please share it in the forum by clicking on the "Create your project" button! I’d also like to see the steps you took to get there and a brief explanation of each one! You can also look at what the other students on this course are doing and give them feedback. In the end we always learn a lot from each other. It has been a pleasure to guide you in this process and to have shared my vision of flatlay photography with you. If you have any questions feel free to contact me through the forum. I’ll reply as soon as I can but please be patient as I’m working on different projects but I will get back to you. Thanks so much again for taking this course and don’t forget to tag me in your images when you upload them on Instagram so that I can see them on there and keep up to date with everything you’re doing! ”
