“Gradients and volume In this lesson we'll see how we can generate gradients and volumes with the pen. One of the biggest challenges with the pen is to generate different tones of black with just one black ink. So I recommend the following exercises. We will make small black lines, one on top of the other, and we will separate them, reducing the pressure. This gives us different tones of that same black. It is very important, we will use that texture in almost any illustration. Another thing that can be useful is to do exercises of thin lines side by side. That is very similar to what we saw...”

Ricardo Macía Lalinde
A course by Ricardo Macía Lalinde
Born in Medellín, Colombia, Ricardo Macía is a graphic designer who recently made a professional detour to devote himself to the art of illustration. Throughout his career he has worked with brands like [i]Editorial Norma[i], the University of Antioquia, and the newspaper [i]El Colombiano[i]. His favorite tool is the ballpoint pen because it enables him to recreate virtually any texture and enrich his illustrations with realism.
In recent years, he's been working on a personal project where he creates dreamlike worlds that question society and individual identity. Animals and organic shapes can be found in most of his work as symbols of protest against mankind's destruction of nature and threat to the very existence of the human race.
