About the final project for: Furniture Restoration and Transformation for Beginners

Furniture Restoration and Transformation for Beginners

“And up to here all the contents of our course. We hope that you have learned a lot and that you have encouraged to start immediately to recover the forgotten beauty of pieces and furniture. It has been an honor for us to be able to share our knowledge with you and that you have accompanied us here. Thank you. Remember that it is very important to start with simple pieces and in good condition, so you will establish knowledge and you will be able to progress without blocking yourself. And it is also important that you enjoy the process, from our experience that always results in more beautiful and well-made finishes. There are several ways to achieve the same result, so experiment, try and have fun until you reach the technique with which you feel most comfortable. And of course, you are unique, so your furniture should be too. Tell us its story, what it makes you feel, what you have been inspired by, and you will see how, by magic, it comes to life and its design has an unequaled meaning and beauty. Now we are going to review the different development phases of the final project. We have chosen the design and restoration of two old wooden chairs with various techniques to achieve different styles from the same model. You let your creativity fly to do your own project with the knowledge learned during the course. Concept Decide what furniture you want to transform and what will be the finish of it. To guide you through the entire process, create a reference mood board. We use these two for our project, we leave them as additional resources in Unit 2 of the course.

Preparation, pickling and minor repairs As we taught you in Unit 3, analyze the state of your piece and clean and deworm if necessary. Perhaps in your case you do not have woodworm and you can save this step, but if you see that your piece requires it, do not risk and deworm it (it will be easy and fast), so you save having to restore it again once it is finished. Next, depending on the style of your furniture and the state in which it is, you will have to define if it needs to be sanded or stripped, and if it needs any repair. Strip and get to work with the small repairs that your piece needs, applying what we teach you in Unit 3.
Sandpaper and primer Before painting or varnishing, prepare the surface of your piece by sanding any imperfections. Then apply the primer.
Painted or varnished Choose the product that you are going to need according to the finish you want to give it. We always advise you to choose the highest quality products to ensure greater durability and easier application. Whatever you choose, review the lessons in Unit 5 to apply the techniques we teach you that you think will best suit your piece. Finally, if you consider it necessary, add an accessory to your piece. You already have it!
Our other piece Now we have shown you the process with photos of the lacquered effect chair, but, as you have seen during the course, we have also designed and restored one with a worn effect: this is the before and after.
Now share your final project with all of us by clicking on "Create your project". Remember to share both the final result of your piece and the steps that have led you to it. It would be great if you showed an image of each step, showing how the state of your piece is progressing little by little, and add a brief explanation about what you have done in each one. So we can give you feedback. We will be in the forum to answer all your questions, but we ask for your patience, since our day to day in the workshop and in the studio sometimes absorbs a lot of time. We will try to respond as soon as possible. In addition, we invite you to participate and advise your colleagues, so they will feel accompanied and surely you can help each other a lot. ”

“Final Project We've reached the end of this course on Domestika. Thanks for making it up to here. In our case, our final project was to design and repair two antique wooden chairs using several techniques to create different styles based on the same model. Choose the piece you want to transform and what finish you'll give it. Once you've decided, assess your piece. Then clean it and, if necessary, remove any parasites. After that, if you choose to do so, start stripping it. Then, perform some minor repairs, sand it, and prime it if necessary. When it's ready, decide whether you'll paint it ...”
