Handcrafted silk screen printing is an age-old technique that has reinvented itself throughout history, giving rise to the creation of exclusive and impressive designs. With more than twenty years of experience, Ana Escalera, pattern maker and founder of the studio El Presente Perfecto, dedicates herself to this manual art, working on handcrafted prints and other projects for brands like Steve Mono, Dior, Zubi, and Peseta.

In this course, learn how to create patterns to print on fabric with the screen printing technique. Go through all the stages of production, from visual research to color treatment and pattern creation. By the end, you will have a piece of textile art that can be used in several ways, including as a fashion accessory or a decorative element.

Learn about Ana's career, discover how she started working with screen printing and pattern making, and hear about why she created her own studio, El Presente Perfecto. In addition, discover her main influences and go over the basic structure of the course.

Then, learn basic screen printing concepts and the main graphic resources used for this technique. See how to use basic colors and combine textures to create shadows. Build a mood board with your references and start working on your sketches.

With your ideas and sketches organized, begin developing the pattern design for your screen print, both manually and digitally by using Adobe Illustrator. Ana teaches you how to work with colors and experiment with your palette.

Get down to business and start the screen printing process. After organizing your materials, workspace, and paintings, begin the first stage of the process: preparing the canvas. Then, expose your screen to the light to record your drawing.

Finally, make the pattern’s repetitions one by one, using the continuous or "lyonesse" technique. Then Ana gives you some closing tips about how to use your printed fabric in different ways.

What is this course's project?

Design a pattern to be used for artisanal screen printing.

Who is it for?

To anyone interested in textile design. If you already have experience with pattern design, you will learn the tricks for adapting them to your own silk screen.
