Learn to design and paint a poster with the traditional art from Buenos Aires
Alfredo Genovese -painter and teacher specialized in filleting Buenos Aires applied to packaging, advertising, bodypainting and tattoos- will show you what is the filleted Buenos Aires and how to make a poster from start to finish with this technique.
You will learn the history of filleting, its applications, draw its main iconographic elements and discover the rules that govern the design of this traditional painting technique with synthetic enamel and long hair brushes.

The filleted is a pictorial and traditional art that was born in Buenos Aires in the late nineteenth century as an ornament to embellish cars, trucks and urban buses (called collectives) and that eventually became the iconographic emblem that best represents the city . The word fillet is derived from the Latin filum, meaning thread, and refers to a line that serves as ornamentation.
It is characterized by very stylized forms, the use of bright colors and an overload of their compositions. Within the works also include texts, which can be witty phrases, poetic sayings or names made with Gothic or cursive letters, always very ornamented.
The painter who decorated the cars was called filleting and did the work with long hair brushes or filleting brushes. The filleted with time happened to become a particular form of design that is applied in advertising, bodypainting and tattoos.
In December 2015 the filleted porteno was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
What's included in this course?
You will begin to get to know the work better, the influences of Alfredo Genovese and his teachers of filleting outside the school of Fine Arts.
Then you will learn the rules that govern the design of the thread and how to draw the main elements of the repertoire of shapes for its composition, the application of the volume, the strokes with the long hair brush and the preparation of the table on which you will apply the color of base
Then you will get to work and begin to paint. First the flat colors of the filleted motif and the letters, then the painting of the planes of light, then you will prepare the Yapan (the semi-transparent mixture that is used to paint the shadows) and apply the shadows and the shines
Finally, Genovese will give you the latest recommendations on the varnish finish and the digital edition of your poster.
What is this course project about?
In this course, you will create a threaded poster that you can use as a graphic piece for your portfolio.
You can also implement the technique in some of your design or in any project of lettering, calligraphy, illustration, etc.
Who is it for?
This course is aimed at illustrators, designers, lyricists, calligraphers, painters and creatives in general interested in knowing the technique and artistic style of the filleted Buenos Aires.
First of all you will need curiosity. No previous knowledge of drawing is required!
Regarding the materials, you will need: pencil, A4 sheets, tracing paper, wood paper, white chalk, yellow chalk and charcoal, a sewing needle, talc, a panel of MDF or 3 mm multilaminated (although you can do it on other support that prefer), long brushes (lettering or filleting), synthetic enamel of various colors, foam rubber roller, thinner and clear varnish.

Alfredo Genovese is a filleting and painting teacher born in Buenos Aires. During his years as a student of Fine Arts he noticed with amazement the absence of filleting in the study programs and decided to take classes with the maestro León Untroib changing his work as a lyricist for filleting.
After obtaining the title of Professor of Painting, he spent two years in Italy, and traveled through Africa and the East incorporating new techniques in his work such as artistic screen printing, mural painting or the motifs of the Trompe l'oeil or trompe l'oeil.
Later, he created his own studio in Buenos Aires, the Porteño Fileteado Workshop, and he made contact with one of the last car trolleys teachers, Ricardo Gómez, with whom he patiently learned the trade of decorating cars.
After experimenting on traditional media, Genovese went on to compose his fillets on the human body with an advertising campaign for Muchmusic, adorning the bodies of models and outstanding musicians from Argentina.
In the advertising area he has also worked for brands such as Nike, Evian, Red Bull, Mercedes Benz, Coca-Cola or Alfajores Havanna and in the publishing world, he illustrated the covers of Alejandro Dolina's books and magazines such as Wipe, Club del vino, elgourmet.com and the supplement Ñ de Clarin, among others.
Together with the tattoo artist Claudio Momenti, he introduced filleting into the tattoo and today his work is very appreciated in this medium.
Since 1997 he teaches courses and lectures on filleting Buenos Aires and has published three books about his research in the field of steak iconography.
On June 28, 2012, the Legislature of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires declared him Outstanding Personality of Culture.
