About the video: Color 2

Overview

“I'm still working on color, I'll share with you the way I apply the layers of color in acrylic, how I use gouache and polychrome pencil. Finally, I will show you which shades you should pay attention to since their pigments make them more difficult to apply. ”

In this video lesson Cecilia Varela addresses the topic: Color 2, which is part of the Domestika online course: Children's Narrative Illustration with Mixed Techniques. Create an illustrated story full of life with a unique style that combines multiple techniques.

Partial transcription of the video

“Color I'm going to start on the background, which will be pretty dark. I don't want the color to bleed. So I'm going to be pretty careful about letting it dry in the case of the sky. I'm going to take some Payne's gray, and I'll grab a bit of black, too. What helps me a little is that the colors I'm adding to the gray and black have white, like this blue. On the pot it says "glacial blue." So it won't dilute the color too much. It will stick when I paint the layers. When I use pure colors, like blue, for example, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue... Cecilia Varela is a Córdoba-based (Argentina) illustrator and author of several children's books. Ever since she was a little girl, she knew she wanted to be an illustrator, a dream that grew out of her passion for children's books and stories. She studied at the National Institute of Fine Arts and specialized in drawing and painting.

She won first prize at the Mexican Illustrators Contest in 2007 and has since then collaborated with different publishers in Mexico and Spain, like Edelvives and Alfaguara. Cecilia creates her artwork by hand and then digitizes it for publishing. She uses a wide variety of techniques in her work, but most often creates with acrylics, gouache, collage, and colored pencils.
