About the final project for: Editorial Illustration: Sharpen Your Conceptual Skills

Editorial Illustration: Sharpen Your Conceptual Skills

“We've reached the end of this course. Thank you for joining me! I hope you enjoyed taking this course as much as I enjoyed putting it together and that you now have a better sense of your own abilities as an illustrator. It is now time to start working on your final project if you haven’t already. To help you, I will sum up here the main steps you need to follow to complete your project. Make sure to keep track of your progress. It'd be great to see the different steps and for you to explain the choices you've made along the way. The Article Find an article you think would make for a good assignment. It can be about a subject you're particularly interested in or anything you think could make for an interesting challenge. Read that article carefully and identify keywords and/or key passages. Start doodling on the margins the first things that come to mind when reading. Sketches From those initial doodles, start drawing a few proposals. Use some of the conceptual tools that you learned during the course: graphic devices, associations, metaphors, hyperboles, and more.

Review Now play the role of the Art Director and review your proposals. See what works and what doesn't then select one to three sketches to move on to the next step. Finalize Your Illustrations Move on to Illustrator (or any other design software you feel comfortable using) and perfect your illustrations. Add color and any other details or effects you think were missing from the initial sketch and would add to the original concept.
And that's it! You have completed your assignment. Congratulations!
With the tips I provided, you can approach your illustrations in a more professional manner. Don’t forget to keep practicing! Publish your project in the forum and collaborate with your fellow illustrators by commenting on each other's posts. I’m very busy as the Creative Director of the New Yorker, but I’ll be in the forum as much as I can to look at what you've done and answer questions if you have any. I can’t wait to see the work that you do! Talk to you soon!”

“Final Project Congratulations! You've made it through the course and now you have an illustration that reflects an article of your choice. I hope you have a better sense of your abilities as an illustrator and understand the role of an art director. I introduced you to the two facets of my personality, the illustrator and the art director. I walked you through how to read the text. We covered different conceptual tools, which you have at your disposal. Remember, you can always do some warm-up exercises to come up with concepts. You already know what the art director is looking for in a sket...”
