About the final project for: Illustrating Emotions through Color

Illustrating Emotions through Color

“Dear students, we have reached the end of the course. It was a journey full of learning where we addressed the basic themes to tell a story graphically, emphasizing color and its use to recreate emotions. Each point developed during the course was analyzed so that you could get the most out of it and at the same time with a pragmatic approach; from introducing myself to you and sharing with you my career and inspirations that have shaped my style, to developing theoretical and practical issues on the principles of design and color. I first spoke to them about the importance of color as a narrative element in movies and books, its emotional charge, and the cultural associations that accompany it. Then we move on to understanding color from a technical perspective: its properties and the ways we can combine it to create harmonies. Within the category of color, I also addressed a very important topic: the values, or in other words, the amount of light that a color contains and how from this knowledge we can control the contrast and correct reading of our works.

In the design area, I addressed the issue of form language, how to start creating interesting silhouettes starting from basic figures, respecting certain parameters such as balance, contrast, hierarchy, exaggeration and variety; and at the same time playing with these concepts to give life to our characters and the environment in which they will be situated.
In addition to the construction of silhouettes, we saw how we can integrate depth to our illustrations making use of 3 planes and the application of the corresponding values. We also saw a section on the expressiveness of the character, we explored gestures and postures from the observation of ourselves!
Finally, I amalgamated all those topics to create a single piece of illustration with which I experimented with different lights and colors with the intention that they would notice the different atmospheres that can be created from the manipulation of some Photoshop tools and conclude in a ready piece to be shared on social media or with a printed output.
While this course was a very themed journey, it was designed for you to experiment, practice and explore as many times as you like. Remember that there are no exact formulas or recipes for something to work, but there are techniques that you can learn, and ingredients to use so that your result is above all: authentic. For the final project, I encourage you from the beginning to be guided by your intuition and experience to select the phrase to represent: what moves you the most? What story have you lived and want to tell? The best stories are those born from your own experience, so don't be afraid to use your memories. I know the result will excite you. Remember that the creative process is fickle, so don't push yourself too hard, on the contrary, allow yourself to feel. I hope you have fun and are constant. I will be reviewing your progress in the forum and I will be happy to give you feedback at the speed and availability that I can respond, be sure that I will be on the lookout! Finally, remember that we can all learn from everyone, so I encourage you to participate by sharing constructive criticism with your colleagues, as the great community that we are :) Thank you for joining me and I send you a big hug! ”
