The illustrator and teacher Carlos Rodríguez Casado is an expert in the watercolor technique. He works the organic textures with mastery, playing with the different effects that watercolor offers: from more worn textures that he applies in his cartoons to realistic details created through the superposition of layers for his innumerable portraits for publishing and press.

This is his third course at Domestika and perhaps his most personal one, as it shows the techniques he has developed in his career as an illustrator, based on his own observation of watercolor and how pigment and water interact on paper. He will show you how to apply the techniques in both dry and wet formats so that you’re able to illustrate a still from your favorite movie.

In his first course, Watercolor Portrait Sketchbook, Carlos introduces you to drawing and watercolor techniques to create spontaneous portraits anywhere; in his second, more advanced course, he shows you the keys and techniques to create a Caricature in Watercolor.

Start the course by getting to know Carlos and his career as a press and publishing illustrator; he tells you about his passion for drawing, his influences, and the techniques he uses to include characters in their context so that you can develop a still from a film scene.

In the second unit, review the materials you need to carry out your illustration (watercolors, brushes, and paper) and the techniques with which you can achieve surprising effects. Learn how to master water to achieve different color intensities, and how to turn "defects" into effects. Learn the importance of color and how to create a reduced color palette.

In the third unit, begin to shape your illustration by creating your sketch. Learn how to place the light in your scene, then the shadows, and see how this helps you to bring volume and a specific atmosphere to your illustration. Paint the scene—both the characters and the background—from the blurred planes on a wet medium, to create the color base of your illustration.

Then, work on dry close-ups of your scene to direct the eye and achieve a focusing effect. Finally, reinforce the lights and shadows by layering, making the final result of your drawing more homogeneous.

What is this course's project?

Illustrate in watercolor a film still, working the different planes and blurring effects with wet and dry techniques.
