Art Toy Creation: Needle Felting Technique

“Dear student, thank you for having accompanied me throughout this course. I loved creating it and being able to share with you the knowledge that I acquired with the experience throughout my career. So let's review what was taught and what steps I took to create the final project for this course: a art toy felted with a needle. Remember that it will be more interesting to consolidate your learning if you create an original project. Search for reference images To create your final project, choose a theme that piques your interest and from that theme, do an image search to get inspired. For my searches I usually use Pinterest, Google Search and Shutterstock. But you can always choose other platforms to find the images that will spark your imagination.

Sketch your idea When you're satisfied with the amount of images you've collected, start sketching! You can make one if you think enough or dozens. Here the important thing is to point out your idea, but also to develop it by refining the shape of the art toy and analyzing whether, when sculpted, it will be an interesting piece from all points of view, but also a piece with stability.
Experiment with materials and tools For felting you should first familiarize yourself with the materials and tools. Tests the wool, the filling, the carding brushes and of course, the needles. At this stage, the important thing is that you learn through experience how the tools and materials react.
Creates a spherical shape Using the technique demonstrated in the course creates a sphere using the filler / dracalon and covers it with wool.
Creates a cylindrical shape Here what I propose is the creation of a cylinder and after adding a texture to this shape, you can decorate the cylinder using lines or even dots.
Sculpt a more complex shape To create a complex shape, you should always start with the simplest geometric shapes. What I propose is that you create three spheres of different sizes and then join them together. What is intended is to add wool in the area where they were connected, camouflaging this division and thus unifying the aspect of the piece. Don't forget to share the final result of the pieces you are sculpting. I want to see what you are creating!
Join the two pieces Use all the pieces you have previously carved together to create a finished piece. Here you can start to idealize a possible character or if you prefer, you can just test the way of sculpting with wool. What I propose is that you join the three pieces so that they are well connected to each other thus becoming a single piece. I look forward to seeing how your experience is going!
Create small tubes Now that you have created a complex piece out of simple shapes, you have joined those shapes to another shape. You created a piece with a higher level of complexity. And if you followed my suggestion, you are almost finished with your first character or you have just tried the technique, which is also very important. What I propose is that with wool create small tubes so that you can apply them to the piece that you have been building throughout the exercises. You can use these tubes to complete your piece with arms, but don't limit yourself and try to understand the potential in this way by applying it with different purposes. What if you turn the little tube into a nose? Or else in a lock of hair? I am curious to see that fabulous creation will come out of your hands! How are you going to use this shape in your piece, I’m waiting to see!
Final touches You created your first piece and / or gained experience in needle felting. Now it's time to check if your piece is ready to be considered as finished. Check that the entire area of the garment is covered with wool, if there are any imperfections that you can correct, confirm that you can blend the needle marks and eliminate any fibers that are loose. Now you can say that your piece is ready to be shown to the world. I am curious to see that fabulous creation will come out of your hands!
I hope I managed to spread my enthusiasm for Toy Art and demonstrate how fascinating the needle felting technique can be. If with this course you found a new way of expressing yourself or if you discovered a new hobby, or if it inspired you to look for a new artistic direction, then I can say: mission accomplished! I look forward to seeing your new creations! I am waiting for you at the Forum. I will be available to support you and answer your questions, so instead of saying goodbye, I say goodbye with a big hug and a goodbye! ;) ”
