About the final project for: Female Character Design for Comics

Female Character Design for Comics

“Dear students, So now that you reached the end of the lessons, let’s try to do a final project. Something that will put everything we talked about together. Let’s create a female character and place her on a page using a composition that shows her personality. Starting with a quick layout of what we want to draw, you can place the main action line of the figure, then start adding the head, arms, rib cage, hips and legs. You can also place roughly hands, feet and some of the face details. Then pick reference pics for the elements you are not super sure how to draw from memory. After the main layout is done, and still using the pencil you can start working on the structure of the figure, adding volume. This is where you can start thinking about basic anatomy by placing the muscles. You can draw the face details, hair, hands and feet. This is where you use those elements to improve your composition. Remember to pay attention to the silhouette of the figure. The main pose and action needs to be very clear. You can add clothes or costumes now, using them to compose the whole piece. Remember to think of them as 3d shapes, so make sure to place light, shadow and texture to make things visually interesting. When the pencil part is done and everything is placed, you’ll ink your pencil lines using a brush. Remember to always think of where the light is coming from, so you can decide where thin or thick lines will be placed. Make sure to follow the flow of the hair with the brush. Use the brush to add different textures to the clothes or costumes. Use black and white ares to divide planes and to give the impression of highlights and dark shadow areas. After your inked lines are placed you can add inked wash. Just mix a little bit of ink with water. Test your grey tones on a side paper. When you are happy with how light or dark the grey is, just start adding shades on your figure. The idea is to always remember where the light you established is coming from. Try to start with lighter shades of grey, then keep adding darker tones. I used a female character here, but feel free to draw male characters, or whatever comes to your mind: aliens, monsters, animals. Thank you so much for reaching this final stage. And remember to practice as much as you can. It takes a lot of time to be good at anything. So keep drawing. I will do my best to reply to your comments and posts, but please be patient since I’m usually very busy all the time. And don’t be shy to add comments to anything we see here. It’s always a good thing to have different feedback. Cheers! ”

“Final Project So now that we have reached the end of this Domestika course, let's watch a summary of what we have learned. At the start of the course, I talked about my career path, the artists that have influenced me. Then I explained what we'd learn through the course. Then I introduced the materials I use, which are the ones I recommend as well. Then we moved on to picking references for the details of your drawing. I showed you how to place the drawings on the page using composition and we refined the lines. After that, I taught you how to draw hair, facial expressions, hands and clothe...”
