About the video: What is italic calligraphy
Overview
“I love to know the origin of the letter, where it comes from and how so in this lesson I will tell you about it. The history and the bases of the letter and why this letter is so important for our day to day. The benefits of being able to use it, the improvement of our personal handwriting, etc. This calligraphy is also called chancellor and its name comes directly from the fact that its use was exclusively for the Vatican chancellery. However, and due to the simplicity and beauty of its strokes, its use spread to princely secretaries and in the intellectual environments that imitated it and embellished it with arabesques or flourishes. As teachers of the italics we must highlight Palatino, Aldo Manucio and Ludovico Arrighi. Arrighi's work is especially interesting for his treatise La Operina (1522). It is a manual that presents the general rules of the chancellor and teaches you how to do it. It tells us about the importance of the oval, the ascending and descending ones, and emphasizes that the eye is always above geometry. I totally share this idea of Arrighi since on many occasions we do not obsess that all the letters are perfect and in my opinion the calligraphy is quite the opposite, it is gestures and a global vision of the writing. Before finishing this lesson I would also like to name you classical masters such as the Basques Juan Yciar (Arte Subtilísima, 1550) and Pedro Madariaga. In Andalusia we have Francisco Lucas and Pedro Díaz Morante whose works are of the same quality as that of the Italians.”
